Burnt Sienna 60 ml
PR102
Sienna (from Italian terra di Siena 'Siena's earth') is an earth pigment containing iron oxide and manganese oxide. In its natural state it is yellowish-brown and is called raw sienna. When heated, it turns reddish-brown and is called burnt sienna. It takes its name from the city-state of Siena, where it was produced during the Renaissance. Along with ochre and umber, it was one of the first pigments used by humans, and it is found in many cave paintings. Since the Renaissance, it has been one of the brown pigments most widely used by artists.
The first recorded use of sienna as a color name in English was in 1760.
This oil color is made from the natural pigment PR102 which is one of the artist's most classic, vibrant and indispensable earth colors. While many modern versions today are made from the synthetic PR101, this color based on PR102 is the true, natural earth pigment.
- Rich and warm reddish brown : Straight from the tube, the color appears as a deep, dark chestnut or chocolate brown.
- Glowing undertone : When applied thinly, the color reveals a stunning, intense and almost flaming orange-red undertone that has a very special warmth.
- Semi-transparent to transparent : In contrast to the highly opaque synthetic iron oxides, the natural PR102 pigment is known for its high transparency.
- Unsurpassed for Glazing : The color is renowned for its optical properties in thin layers. Glazing with burnt sienna over a light undercoat gives an unsurpassed, luminous depth reminiscent of amber or polished mahogany.
- Beautiful skin and hair tones : Mixed with white, it creates warm, salmon, peachy and very vibrant skin tones. It is also perfect for capturing the play of brown and reddish hair.
- The classic deep black : Mixed in equal parts with ultramarine blue (PB29), burnt sienna creates an incredibly rich, chromatic black. This mixture is preferred by many artists as it appears far more vibrant and atmospheric on the canvas than ready-made black from a tube.
- Natural Earth Tones : It tones down greens and yellows for perfect, organic fall colors and landscape tones.
- Lightfastness : Excellent (Category I). As a natural iron oxide, the pigment is completely permanent and will not fade or change over time.
- Texture : Can have a slightly grainy or "toothy" texture depending on how finely the manufacturer has ground the pigment. This gives the oil paint a lovely, organic character on the brush.
- Drying time : Medium to fast. As the pigment contains natural iron (and often traces of manganese), it acts as a mild drier in the linseed oil, providing a smooth and reliable drying process.
