PG17

Chromium Oxide Green PG17 is a classic, inorganic artist's color known for its muted, olive-green earth tone and extreme durability. Originally produced in 1809, the pigment is now an essential on the palette of landscape and portrait painters due to its natural, matte appearance.

Chromium oxide green differs significantly from modern, intense greens (such as phthalo green) in its calm, dusty and warm character. The color has a unique ability to absorb and reflect light, which gives very lifelike shades:

• Underpainting: Its high opacity and matte finish make it ideal for underpainting and the "verdaccio" technique in portrait painting to build up skin tones.
• Landscapes: Perfect base for vegetation, leaves and shady areas in nature.
• Mixtures: Creates beautiful, broken olive and military green shades when mixed with ochre or umber. Added with titanium white creates a muted, light pastel green.
