  • PY42

  • This sienna made from the pigment PY42 imitates natural sienna. Using PY42 creates a more uniform and covering version of the classic earth color.

    • Dark, raw gold and warm : The color delivers a deep, saturated yellow-brown hue. It is significantly darker and more reddish-brown in undertone than a regular yellow ochre.
    • Cleaner but less complex : Because PY42 is chemically produced, it lacks the natural impurities (such as clay and manganese) found in real soil. The color therefore appears more "clean" and uniform on the palette
    • Semi-opaque to semi-transparent: Synthetic iron oxide (PY42) generally has a stronger hiding power than the natural earth (PY43). It is less suitable for completely transparent glazes, but on the other hand it covers better when you paint alla prima (wet-on-wet). Absolute maximum lightfastness: Like its natural cousin, PY42 is completely permanent (ASTM Category I). It is not affected by sunlight, acid or the ravages of time. High tinting power: Synthetic pigments have smaller particle sizes than natural earths. This gives this version a significantly higher tinting strength than a classic Sienna. You therefore need to use less of it in your mixtures.
    • Warm shadows and underpainting: It is excellent for creating the first, warm shadow layers in a painting or for toning a canvas (imprimatura). Great skin tones: When mixed with white, it creates warm, tanned and golden skin tones without being chalky. Perfect partner for landscapes: Mixed with blue pigments (e.g. ultramarine) it gives deep, realistic olive green and forest green shades, which are perfect for landscape painting. Long drying time: Please note that sienna oil paints are generally among the slowest drying colors on the palette, as the pigment absorbs a lot of oil.
