Red ochre 60 ml
PY42, PR101
The oil paint Red Ochre , when made from a mixture of the pigments PY42 and PR101 , is a modern, light-fast and very stable earth color.
Where traditional red ochre is dug directly from the ground as raw clay, this version is created in a laboratory from synthetic iron oxides, resulting in a color with far greater purity, uniformity, and strength than the historical version.
PR101 (Synthetic Red Iron Oxide) : Provides the primary, deep, brick red base. It is an extremely strong and durable pigment.
PY42 (Synthetic Yellow Iron Oxide) : Added to tone down the intense red color to a more muted, warm, and yellowish/orange tone. It is this yellow component that recreates the natural, "earthy" hue that characterizes classic ochre.
Warm and Earthy : The color appears as a rich, warm, brick red or reddish brown hue. It is significantly less intense and garish than organic reds (such as cadmium red or magenta), making it very pleasing to the eye.
Natural Undertones : When applied thinly, it reveals its warm, golden and orange undertones due to the PY42 content.
Semi-opaque to opaque : Thanks to PR101, this oil paint has good to high hiding power. It covers significantly better than, for example, ultramarine blue and can quickly cover dark undercoats.
Soft and homogeneous : Since synthetic pigments have a completely uniform particle size, the color feels very creamy and smooth on the brush without the sandy or coarse texture sometimes found in natural earth colors.
Indispensable for skin tones : In portrait and figure painting, this color is absolutely essential. Mixed with white (and possibly a little yellow), it creates incredibly vivid, warm and natural skin tones.
Muted secondary colors : Mixed with blue (e.g. ultramarine) it produces beautiful, muted, almost gray-violet or earthy brown shades instead of bright purple tones.
Light Fastness : Excellent (Category I). Synthetic iron oxides are among the most permanent and weather-resistant pigments available. The color will never fade, no matter how much light it is exposed to.
Drying time : Fast to medium. Iron oxides act as natural drying agents (desiccants) in linseed oil. This color will therefore typically dry significantly faster on canvas than, for example, ultramarine blue.
