Titanium dioxide was called ilmenite after the discovery of large deposits of titanium ore in Ilmen (Russia) in the eighteenth century; but its use as a pigment began later, in the twentieth century. Due to its properties (Titanium dioxide has the highest refractive index of all white pigments, so it has a very high hiding power), this pigment has been preferred over other white pigments despite its higher price.
This titanium white contains a small amount of zinc white to combine the best properties of both pigments for a more versatile paint. The blend helps balance the individual weaknesses of each pigment.
The primary benefits include:
- Improved consistency and workability: Pure titanium white can be "long" or stringy in consistency and remain relatively soft when it dries. Adding zinc white improves the consistency of the paint and makes it easier to work with.
